13-minute meditation improved attention, memory and emotional regulation (Basso et al., 2019)

Introduction

Researchers wanted to investigate whether brief, consistent meditation could elicit brain and behaviour changes, similar to those reported in longer, more intense meditation practices.

The authors hypothesised the meditation group would improve mood state and executive functions: attention, working memory, response inhibition and cognitive flexibility, recognition memory and behavioural pattern separation.

Further, researchers predicted meditators would demonstrate enhanced emotional regulation in response to an acute psychological stress test and that the biggest stress-response gains would predict the biggest mood and cognition gains.

Design

The Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) included subjects aged 18-45, all non-meditators, who were randomised into either a 13-minute daily guided meditation session or a 13-minute daily podcast listening session as an active control group, for a total of 8 weeks. 

A total of 76 subjects were recruited from New York. Throughout the course of the study, 34 subjects dropped out (n = 14) or were excluded (n = 20), for a total subject number of 42 (15 males, 27 females) - a 44.7% attrition rate, in line with other longitudinal studies.

Measurements

 Mood; prefrontal function (attention, working memory, inhibition, flexibility); hippocampal function (recognition memory, pattern separation); baseline cortisol; and emotional regulation via the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST), a validated acute-stress paradigm. Combining subjective and objective measures reduces reliance on self-report alone.

Results

  • At 4 weeks, no result was significant

  • At 8 weeks, meditators (vs. control) showed decreased mood disturbance, anxiety, and fatigue; improved attention, working memory, and recognition memory; reduced anxiety response to the TSST; and, unexpectedly, worse sleep quality.

(authors speculate late-night meditation sessions may have coincided with other sleep-disrupting habits)

  • During the TSST, both groups showed equivalent cortisol spikes, but meditators reported lower subjective anxiety, suggesting meditation shifts stress appraisal rather than physiology.

  • Individuals who had better mood correlated with better emotional regulation, although individuals with increased cognitive function did not.

  • Baseline cortisol of individuals did not shift, which authors partly attribute to measurement noise.

  • Some cognitive tasks showed no improvement, consistent with wider research that meditation’s effects are strongest for emotion, moderate for attention, though weakest for memory.

Evidence grade: Emerging 

Strengths

  • An active control (podcast group) helps isolate a meditation-specific effect, rather than a placebo effect of novelty alone.

  • Despite high attrition, a priori power analysis confirmed n=42 was sufficient, and groups showed no demographic differences.

  • High adherence (78.6% meditation, 91.4% control, above the field average of 64%); multi-method design (self-report + tasks + physiology).

Limitations:

  • This is a single, unreplicated study - its size resembles more of a pilot study.

  • Cortisol nulls: likely a measurement artefact (collection times spanned 11 am–8 pm against a hormone with strong circadian rhythm) rather than proof of no effect.

  • Anxiety reduction was self-reported, not physiologically confirmed — the emotional-regulation claim leans more on subjective than objective data.

Conclusion

The study proposes an 8-week 'minimum dose' for brief daily meditation to meaningfully reduce negative mood and stress and enhance attention, effects otherwise seen only in experienced meditators or longer, more intense retreats.
